Sovana
Today the home of a few hundred inhabitants, Sovana, for reasons still unclear, was in the past, something more than just a town to the inhabitants of the Maremma Hill. It was in fact the most important Etruscan centre in the area, a place where this glorious civilization found the ideal conditions to express their high artistic-architectural attitudes and make their marks in history. The great Romanesque cathedral, built at the end of the village, was erected on Pope Gregory VII orders, who was born in the town itself as Ildebrando di Soana. The Sirena tomb, Ildebranda and the recent discovery of the Demone Alto (Winged Demon) are all found in Sovana and are monuments unique for their architectural beauty and complexity. A visit to the village is also the perfect opportunity to admire the numerous necropolis hidden in the flourishing hills of Maremma and experience the breathtaking views and landscapes of the territory.
