Trips to the Alberto Manzi outdoor Museum
The first ever educational museum built in the Maremma Collinare. An outdoor museum, it was built to mirror Etruscan cities that once covered this territory, using the ruins that remain today as guides. The tour begins in the so called “living city” on top of a tufo rock plateau opposite the city of Pitigliano. Here are two models that resemble typical ancient settlements: a protohistoric hut and an Archaic age house, both of which allow you to observe the evolution of this ancient civilisation’s architecture. Inside the park is the Gradone Via Cava, an ancient road carved completely into the rock with 20 metre tall walls. Via this ancient road you arrive at the “city of the dead”, a 3rd-2nd century b.c cemetary with two necropolises: the first in Gradone and the second in San.Giovanni on the otherside of the Meleta River, which flows in the valley. Inside the necropolises are two tombs that have been remodeled to resemble the typical Etruscan funeral and the objects that were placed in the tombs to accompany the dead person transition into the afterlife.
