The Erborista pharmacy

The Erborista pharmacy opened in Pitigliano in 1983, after a detailed evaluation of the surrounding territory found an abundance of different medicinal plants and low levels of pollution. This territory, rich in history and a variety of common and rare plant species, enjoys a mild temperature thanks to its vicinity to the sea and the Saturnia hot springs. In fact, over 80% of the medicinal plants in the Mediterranean basin grow wild in this territory. The pharmacy dedicates itself to continuing the ethical philosophy of healing and well-being through prevention, mixing ancient knowledge of “Medicina Tradizionale Mediterranea” (Traditional Mediterranean Medicine) with the most recent findings on the benefits of medicinal plants. The pharmacy works to meet health and beauty needs in the most natural and gentle way, without any harsh side effects. The pharmacy also works to teach others to have a greater respect for Mother Nature and to see her not as resource to be plundered but as a great kingdom that needs to be protected. At the pharmacy, we prepare herbal products (dyes, mother tinctures, supplements, spirits ….) and dermo-cosmetics (jams, Enola, and teas) using mostly local herbs. Since its beginnings, the pharmacy has dedicated endless time and resources towards researching, training and educating students, medical practitioners and natural medicine enthusiasts and has produced several publications and theses. The pharmacy has collaborated with various Italian universities and since 2002, has worked in association with the Comunità di Etica Vivente di Città della Pieve, and has school of naturopathy (Naturovaloris).
