Farm Days
In an over globalised world where people have almost forgotten the simple pleasures of farming life, you can spend a day rediscovering the rural culture that characterises the Maremma hills today as it did centuries ago. Guided by real farmers, you will be taken on a tour of Educational Farms where visitors big or small can learn about the countryside and come into contact with farm animals and products. You can also rediscover the real tastes and smells of the countryside from cheeses to meat to vegetables, while you learn about the traditions of the farmers.
A day making cheese. We begin the day by watching the sheperds lead the sheep to be milked and then we collect the milk needed to make different types of cheese. From milking you will go on to participate in all aspects of the production that goes into making the much loved percorino cheese. We will show you the techniques and the methods, secrets that have been jealously guarded for generations, before moving onto the phase where the cheese is infused with different flavours and shaped depending on the season. At the end of the day you will be able to try the cheeses you helped male and taste the lamb that has been prepared following old traditions.
With your hands in the dough: Thanks to a nearby mill, we can watch the millstones that crush the grain into the flour needed to make bread, delicious sweets and many different kinds of homemade pasta. Togethers with the farmers, you will collect the ingredients, which depending on the season could be wheat, corn, chickpeas, beans or vegetables, and use them to make a delicious meal that you can enjoy when the day is finished. By cooking in this way you won’t miss out on tasting the freshest and best of Maremman cooking, prepared following local traditions. During preparation, children and adults, will participate actively in various stages of processing, which will be led by housewives and farmers.
