Castell’Azzara
Suspended on the slopes of Mount Civitella, the town of Castell’Azzara owes its curious name to the famous game of Zara. According to an ancient legend a dispute over dice between the Aldobrandeschi brothers for the construction of the castle decided the fate and name of the town, which was built between the eleventh and twelfth century.
In addition to name, the town also has curious streets which are entirely dug into the rock in an intricate way which ends in beautiful panoramic views.
The town is set to the east of a nature reserve with splendid beech and chestnut trees, as well as rich sources of fresh water and natural cavities just waiting to be visited.
Strikingly beautiful and interesting, the mining complexes of Siele and Morone were source of the area’s fortune and are made up of thousands of underground veins which characterized the ancient and modern economic activity of these towns.
